ingoaw@aol.deHello! I am very interested in owning wolves just like you. I don't know the specifics and I am saving up the money, but do you have a general idea where owning wolves is ideal? I would not want to raise it anywhere where they would be too confined and I would need to familiarize myself with the behavior of wolves, of course. Thank you! ! . . 2008 . , . .

: animalwood@gmail.comDear Zoltan
I wanted to enquire about filming with Wolves for the forthcoming series of Merlin.
Our opening sequence features wolves and we would be looking to get the following shots on snow:
1. Top shot of wolf guarding unconscious person
2. Top shot of wolf looking submissive
3. Running shots - left to right
4. leap up towards camera
5. howl up to camera
6. running right to left - this will then be a composite shot of wolves pulling our actress on a sleid.
7. Growls/snarls etc.
It would be great if you could let me know if this would be possible, how long do you think we would need to achieve these shots, could you recommend a local camera operator, very importantly when we would need to shoot to guarantee that we can get the shots in snow and of course an idea of costs.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Saraxav990Hi the team ! Sorry for the long time... The title in French is "Quand les loups font leur cinéma". Bye.
In the videos below we try to demonstrate what is filming with animals like: you can find videos of training, shooting and you can also watch director’s cut scenes and trailers. Movies, commercials, funny and not so funny scenes, animals from all over the world in tons... Click. Comment.
We worked on this award-winning three chapter natural history movie in 2000 and 2001 high in the Austrian Alps. The pack of wolves in the movie was not even one year old at the time of the shooting and they have lost their alpha male due to an unfortunate accident. The shooting toke place in sometimes extreme circumstances: it was well under -25 degree Celsius and a wind of app. 120 km/h. One of our trainers, Adam shot his famous picture entitled “Wolves in the snowstorm” there. The picture won the incredible 2nd place at the Photo of the year 2002 competition organized by the Hungarian Association of Journalists.
We worked also with foxes in the movie: in the clip you can see the moments after birth, when the mother is taking newborns to her.

We shot this commercial in 2008 in Slovakia in the Carpathians with our two largest bears Brumi and Mozes.
It was an adventurous shooting: the water of the mountain stream was so cold that after half a day of standing in it Brumi had enough and left the shooting area…
We brought him back.

We must have set a world record with this project: 6 wolves, a bear and a wild boar run together in one frame!
It was an extremely hard shooting (most probably the toughest and most demanding in our career so far) but the result speaks for itself.
The commercial was shot in the Czech Republic in a picturesque location in the forest of Jicin (there used to be a famous Czech cartoon back in the 70’s called Rumcajs about a long-bearded woodsman who also lived with this family in these woods).
Brumi, Lali and the wolves hand-in-hand – one of our best work…
We worked on this commercial for Volkswagen in 2002 ith wolves. The commercial won every single award it could. The main character is Bow, the alpha male who unfortunately is no longer with us for some years now.

The logo of PETROM is a wolf head so it is not a big surprise that we were asked to participate in the commercial with pur wolves. Several wolves appear in the commercial: Maya, who bears with unbelievable jumping abilities, Tobi, our singing wolf, and Bence at the end of the film when his head changes into a howling wolf illustration. The commercial was shot in Romania in wonderful locations in the Carpathians and at the Black Sea.

It may sound easy but it’s not easy at all: it is one of the hardest tasks for a wolf to stand still after a movement and stay still while looking in a specific direction.
In the clip you can see how we train Rufus the alpha male of one of the packs with reward bites to accomplish this. In the other clip you can watch how we practice the same scene with the actor.

Wolves are by nature mistrustful towards men, they avoid them if they can. And this is true for wolves raised by men, certainly to different degrees.
This is why it is of primary importance that actors who play in the same scene with the wolves get to know the animals, win its trust.
You can see a complex task in the clip: the wolf has to stare at the actor standing on a log nearby while the actor is getting scared to death of course and runs to the opposite direction. You can see the step-by-step training sequence for this scene.

How natural can a table be for a wolf? Frankly, not natural at all, especially if it has to stand on it in a hotel room, but with natural motivation techniques and some reward food you can accomplish this. Even that the wolf will do the same task in a 20 square meter hotel room set up in a studio crowded with cameras lighting equipment and the crew.
In the clip you can see how we start training on the table but in the movie you can watch the full scene detailed above.

When a wolf growls, it means it. You cannot make a wolf growl on command, you have to set up an environment in which he has to be angry or subordinated.
In the clip Bow reveals his frightening teeth. He did not do it on command.

Naturally Zoltan was the double for this scene when wolves attack one of the actors. In the clip you can watch the preparation: we stuff Zoltan’s jacket and trousers with big chunks of meat for the wolves to have something to bite on instead of Zoltan’s legs or arms....
